Worldwide the number of new cancers annually is projected to increase from around 15 million today to 24 million in just 20 years. The largest increases are falling on the most disadvantaged populations. While new treatments offer promise, the increasing number of patients and the spiralling costs of new cancer drugs mean no country can afford to treat its way out of the cancer problem. Around half of all cancers could be prevented based on current knowledge and many more could be treated effectively through earlier detection.

Therefore an integrated approach to prevention, early detection and treatment is needed and access to these cancer control measures should be a priority for governments globally.

This international talk raised awareness among a large public of Cancer Challenges of the 21st Century.
